Early Childhood Exhibit

King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

2018

An interactive space for a pioneering Cultural Center for innovation, culture and knowledge.

Early Childhood Exhibit is an interactive space for children zero to five years old that is part of the educational and cultural offerings of the Children's Museum located at Ithra - King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, a place developed by Saudi Aramco in the city of Dhahran that is part of Time Magazine's “World's 100 Greatest Places 2018” list. Ours was the winning design proposal for the space, which we structured in five zones: "Move it" focuses on the development of fine and gross motor skills; "Know it" focuses on basic scientific thinking; "Show it" focuses on artistic expression; "Build it" focuses on collaborative play and communication; and "Grow it" focuses on the development of basic skills in the youngest visitors.

The design is aligned to the shapes of the building, resulting in large-format white surrounding elements we called cocoons, each characterized by the use of a single color inside. For the development of the interactive exhibits, we chose basic concepts that are common to any culture, such as shapes, colors, natural phenomena, as well as the motor and cognitive development milestones of children. In all the zones, we wanted to support sensorial and motor development, promote play, and use of light as an element to elicit wonder and fascination in children.
