Zacatecas Interactive Science and Technology Center
Rooms: Laboratory and Big Bang
Zacatecas, Zacatecas
2018 y 2022
Big Bang:
A hall that offers its content at various levels of comprehension and with a combination of resources.
Laboratory:
A laboratory that fosters scientific thinking and learning.
Big Bang
ZigZag Museum has been able to constantly renovate its spaces thanks to their independence whithin the building, which has turned into an advantage that allows them to easily close the halls for remodeling without having to stop operations. In this constant transformation, the museum seeks a new approach by updating its contents in alignment to the latest trends of Science Museums and moving away from the Children's Museums model.
For the Big Bang Room, the new concept focuses on the way humans understand the Universe, and how our ideas about its origins, structure and functioning have evolved over time. The room also addresses the laws that govern the Universe and the technology that we have created to travel to outer space, explore and study it. The thematic structure has three key approaches: historical, conceptual, and technological; as well as the throughlines of Mexican contributions to Astronomy and how this scientific discipline helps us better understand Earth.
The exhibition design borrows the analogy of a "super cluster": an exhibition system that integrates different resources in groups that hightlight the thematic core of the hall. Interactives support graphic elements to reinforce the overall contents. The combination of walls, interactives, and central modules is similar to the set of systems and galaxies that are part of the cosmic web from our observable Universe.
Laboratory
The client's brief for this laboratory required the incorporatation of already purchased equipment, as well as two fish tanks that were donated. Conceptualized as a space for experimentation and direct observation of science, it seeked to reinforce classroom learning in a practical way and build partnerships with local institutions and scientists for collaborative research. The laboratory addresses research methodologies in various fields of knowledge, specifically in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, through the use of computing and microscopy equipment.
Visitors enter a scientific lab to carry out experiments with the help of a facilitator, so they can understand phenomena related to basic scientific concepts. They also have the opportunity to discuss the rules within the laboratory, its equipment, zones, safety gear and accessories.
The exhibition design proposal is distributed in lab-type areas: the introductory and wait zone, the experimentation and demonstration zone, the sample preparation and equipment handling zone, the storage area, and the specialist and facilitator work area. We adapted the design to the available space, placing surrounding storage solutions and furniture for equipment, and central work tables to allow for the best possible circulation. The furniture design considers modules that are easy to assemble on site, with the possibility of increasing their storage capacity by incorporating more modules vertically without modifying the space. Lighting is integrated into the modules and the existing one was used as general and service lighting.
